Why This Blog

This is a blog where I write about my interpretations (mostly translations that make a little more sense than the ones already available on the web) of Gulzar's songs. They might not be deep, might not even be accurate; but hopefully might prove to be useful. Once in a while I might even go into the philosophy/thought behind the song.

Being a Gulzar fan, I thought it'd be nice to get to know others who enjoy his work; and to discuss Gulzar's lyrics with them. I share my own interpretation of his work, and hope it might lead to a discussion.

I am neither a discoverer, nor a linguist. My observations may not be accurate or unique, but they're sincere. If you don't agree with me, feel free to say so. If you feel I'm wrong, please correct me. If you enjoyed something I wrote, do comment and/or share.

I hope to update this blog regularly. But then, I'm a fickle, so I won't make any promises.

  8. Good work and good to see another of many Gulzar Fans.

I have always wondered why no one mentions the Ghazal from the fil "Griha Pravesh" - "Macchal ke jaab bhi aankhon se chalak jaate hai do aansoo" one of my favourites especially the sher " kahe kya woh badi massomiat se pooch baithe hain.....kya ssach much dil ke maaron ko badi taklieef hoti hai....
Gulzaar sahab has not lost it look at the latest "Jhalla ki labda phire...." its all there.

  10. I am so glad I stumbled upon this blog today. I have been a fan of Gulzaar saab's work, but I have not always understood the lyrics as well as they have been interpreted here(read 7-8 interpretations already) Thanks so much for this blog. I look forward to reading all your posts.

  11. Wow, how beautiful when someone who adores Gulzaar saab stumbles on the work of love and passion by another avid adorer of the poet!
    Excellent work!

  12. Hi Kanupriya.
I have started following your blog to learn urdu and various urdu words that Gulzar uses so deftly in his writing and I sing equally deftly oblivious of their meaning.:P
More than remaining woven with the AR Rahman or Vishal Bhardwaj musical score which perfectly complements Guzar's writing, I now feel like a more aware person to be singing something which was esoteric for years to me.
This awareness of mine is indebted to your fantastic efforts. It takes real guts to give so much time and remain dedicated to nurture something which can easily be dismissed as a fad by a few people.Congratulation on your sustained efforts and unflinching attitude.
At the same time,I would encourage you to berate my appreciation with words like "Where there is a will, there is a way" or "it is sheer pleasure and genuine interest which keeps me going" and keep writing caring the least for bricks & bouquets or compliments & criticism.
Anything you post on web remains etched on web forever.
So, yes you have created history already.May you make this even more glorious!

Pawan udaawe batiyan ho batiyan, pawan udaawe batiyan
Tipo pe na likho chithiya ho chithiya, tipo pe na likho chithiya
Chiththiyon ke sandese widese jaawenge chalengi chhathiyaan - (2)

Saanjh samay jab saanjh liptaave, lajja karein baawari
Kuchh na kahe apane aap se aapi karein batiyaan

Din tera le gaya suraj, chhod gaya aakaash re

    1. Hello,
In this context "jaayi" means "born out of" ... The line is "Birha ki jaayi raina", meaning "The night born out of separation"
