O Saathi Re (Omkara)

आज-कल बहुत कम ही फ़िल्मी गीत ऐसे बन पा रहे हैं जो दिल को छू सकें और दिमाग़ में ठहर जायें।ओंकारा फिल्म का गीत 'ओ साथी रे' उन चुनिन्दा गीतों में से एक है।तो जब इस ब्लॉग पर कई महीने बाद लिखने की बात आई (वो भी गुलज़ार साब के जन्म दिन पर), तो इसको चुनना लाज़मी था।(पर इसे चुनने की उससे भी बड़ी वजह हैं रोहन देसाई जी, जो कई बार मुझसे इस गीत पर लिखने को कह चुके हैं।)

Gulzar calls Vishal Bhardwaj and extension of himself, and this harmony is quite apparent in the songs they have produced together. Out of my favorite romantic numbers in recent times, quite a few come from this collaboration. Be it the utterly beautiful "Bekaraan" from 7 Khoon Maaf, the playful "Dil to Bachcha Hai Ji" from Ishqiya, the soulful "Aur Phir Yun Hua" from Striker or "Pehli Baar Mohabbat Ki Hai" from Kaminey - they manage the strike a chord with you.

In the same line, another favorite is "O Saathi Re" - with its haunting melody and exquisite imagery, the memory of this song lingers on long after it has ended. Props to Shreya Ghoshal and Vishal Bhardwaj for making the song even more ethereal with their fervent and touching voices.


In Omkara, all the leads characterize a facet of human nature. (Posters displaying the leads and their basic underlying nature can be seen in the picture above (spoken like a school student)).

This song features Omi (Ajay Devgn), who is driven by passion and Dolly (Kareena Kapoor), who is the face of innocence - both deep in love. As it happens in love, time simply flies. And like any other couple in love, they just don't want the day to end, ever.

Three bonus bullet points :)
1. Gulzar talks about the musical form of this song (Excerpt from the book - In the company of a poet by Nasreen Munni Kabir):
"Sanchaari is a Bengali form of music that he (Vishal Bhardwaj) and I have discussed many  times. He used it in the Omkara song, 'O Saathi Re'. The Sanchaari allows you to go away from the antara [the second stage of a musical composition] and later return to it."
2. In an imagery similar to the first antara - in the poem "Sun Set" by Gulzar (from the collection Pandrah Paanch Pachhattar), the sun slips on moss covered clouds. Excerpts:
बिदक के हट गया था वो (सूरज) / बहुत फिसलन थी और काई जमी थी बादलों की / पकड़ के आसमां, कोशिश भी की थी उसने संभलने की 
 3. In this youtube video, Gulzar speaks about how if we choose "Bidi jalai le" over "O saathi re" from the same film, he cannot be questioned about writing songs of the commercial kind.

Naina Thag Lenge (Omkara)

Omkara is a tale of love, passion, loyalty and betrayal. If you haven't watched this movie, let me also pitch in my recommendation here - because this is one Bollywood movie that absolutely must be watched. All those who are allergic to swear words (like my mom :D) can stay away, though. But even for them, once you begin to overcome the initial shock of these words, this movie is like poetry. It's heartbreaking and it'll also make you angry. It'll grab your attention from the first scene and hold it till the end credits roll.

Coming to the song in question, it beautifully complements (and sums up) the movie. The lyrics are majestic in their simplicity. For once, Gulzar has stayed away from ornate words and seems to have consciously chosen stark severity to complement the movie's complexity. 

Lyrics, and translation

[[Don't trust your eyes, do not listen to them

'Thagna' is such a nifty little word. It combines deceiving and stealing. So basically you trust someone and they con you - it hurts more than when an unknown person steals from you.]]

Jagte jaadu phookenge re, jagte-jagte jaadu
Jagte jaadu phookenge re, neenden banjar kar denge
Naina thag lenge

[[When awake, they'll cast a spell on you.
And then even sleep will desert you.
These eyes will fool you.

Dasna is basically snake-bite. So just like a snake doesn't care who it is biting, eyes can also deceive their owner. Add to that, once you have fallen prey to their deception, you only take things at face value and lose your sense of right or wrong.]]

Baadlon mein satrangiyaan boyein, bhor talak barsaavein
Baadlon mein satrangiyaan boyein, naina baavra kar denge
Naina thag lenge

[[They'll sow rainbows in the clouds, and make it rain till the morning
They'll surely drive you crazy.
These eyes will cheat you.

I don't know what these lines mean, but I'll try. If we associate it with the previous line (naino ka zahar nasheela re (their venom is intoxicating)) - you know, how when you're inebriated, everything seems more psychedelic and beautiful and colorful. Similarly, these eyes will make you see rainbows in the clouds. -- What do you think these lines mean?]]

Naina raat ko chalte chalte swarga mein le jaavein
Megh-malhar ke sapne beejein, hariyali dikhlaavein

[[These eyes will transport you to Utopia
They'll sow dreams of rain and it would appear as if everything is perfect.

Rains and greenery is associated with prosperity and happiness. Plus swarg (heaven/Utopia) is an imaginary   place where there're no worries and everything is well. Your eyes will make you see good things when there are none.
Again, this may be in continuation to the previous para (baadalon mein satrangiyaan boyein)]]

Naino ki jabaan pe bharosa nahin aata
Likhat-padhat, na raseed na khaata
Saari baat hawaai hai 

[[Don't take their word for anything
Because there's no written agreement, no receipt or record to hold against them
Everything they say is just hot air.

Special mention
I love the poster design of this movie. In various posters, each major character is identified along with their primary characteristic. It's very different and creative, and IMO pretty awesome! (I've spent some time in finding all these poster, so  direct some appreciation towards me as well :P )

Namak (Omkara)

[When I told Rahul that I have written a blog post about 'Namak isk ka', his first words were "But isn't that a controversial song?" I said that's why I was writing about it, to clear away at least some of the controversy.

Sure, the song may throw a few double entendres your way, but I think it was meant to be racy, what with its being filmed on a village dancer. I've heard a few songs old women in villages sing, and they are so risqué they can make our urban ears burn.

Another reason behind posting this song was the fact that the already available translations are so bad, they ruin the whole song.]
